Summary
Staff briefed the board on a request from the Coalition Against Bigger Trucks to adopt a resolution opposing federal pilot plans to allow heavier trucks; Commissioner Pittman asked to place a resolution on the Jan. 20 agenda and the board agreed to add it to the consent/action packet for public notice.
County staff briefed the Cabarrus Board of Commissioners on Jan. 5 about a request from the Coalition Against Bigger Trucks, a nonprofit of local governments and public‑safety officials, asking local governments to oppose federal pilot language that could allow heavier and longer commercial trucks on local streets and increase an interstate gross weight pilot from 80,000 to 91,000 pounds.
Staff said Forsyth County recently adopted a resolution and that the coalition requested letters, a resolution or a phone call to Representative McDowell. Commissioner Pittman said he had already sent a brief letter to Congressman McDowell expressing opposition to heavier truck rules and asked the board to place a proposed resolution on the Jan. 20 agenda. Pittman argued the change would increase roadway wear and the risk of more severe collisions.
Other commissioners questioned whether the county should routinely adopt every requested resolution. Staff said the item was brought forward because Commissioner Pittman had engaged with the coalition and suggested a local benefit. The board agreed to add the resolution to the Jan. 20 packet (consent or action as appropriate) so the public can review and comment before a final vote.
