Board reviews internet‑safety policy changes and several statutorily required policy updates
Summary
Policy staff presented a first read of an updated Internet safety policy adding language to meet a new statutory requirement and reviewed several second‑read policy changes (confidential information, dual enrollment, parental inspection of instructional materials, recruitment/background checks and transportation insurance) to be placed on next week’s consent agenda.
Dr. Sandy Ward presented policy updates during the Jan. 5 work session, bringing forward a first read of Policy 32264205 (Internet safety) and reviewing multiple policies slated for second read.
On Internet safety, Ward said the policy adds language in section C "in response to a new requirement" and updated legal references as part of the fall 2025 package. A board member asked whether "text‑based media" is covered under the policy’s references to "visual media"; Ward said she would need to look into the precise definition and consult the board attorney and would bring clarification to the action meeting.
Ward also reviewed a set of policies for second read that include updates required by state law: confidential information (policy 21257315), dual enrollment (policy 3101), technology in education (policy 3220), web page development (policy 3227), parental inspection and objection to instructional materials (policy 3210), extracurricular activities (policy 3620), public records (policies 50/70/73), recruitment/background checks (policy 7100) and insurance for student transportation (policy 7100 series). She said the policies are available on BoardDocs for public review and welcomed public comment before the board votes next week.
Next steps: Ward will clarify the Internet policy language and definitions requested by the board and those policies on second read will be presented for action in the next meeting; the board invited public feedback via BoardDocs prior to the vote.
