Everett School Committee re-elects Samantha Hurley as chair, names Marconi Almeida Barros vice chair

Samantha Hurley was re-elected chair of the Everett School Committee during the committee’s organizational meeting on Jan. 5, 2026, with members issuing a roll-call endorsement. The meeting began at 8:06 p.m.; the committee confirmed a quorum of 10 members and the student representative, Emma Perry, was recorded present.

Hurley thanked colleagues after the vote and outlined priorities for the coming term, saying she intended to “place a greater emphasis on professional development” and host a committee retreat through MASC. She also said the committee would undertake an intensive review of its rules, policies and procedures and asked for continued support of district expansion efforts to address overcrowding in Everett Public Schools.

Marconi Almeida Barros was elected vice chair after a nomination that included an extended biographical endorsement highlighting his community-engagement work and experience in state-level offices. Barros thanked colleagues after the roll-call vote and reflected on his background and prior committee initiatives.

The committee administered the oath to William Hart as secretary, who repeated the oath to “faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties incumbent upon me as secretary of the Everett School Committee.”

Members voted 10–0 in favor of adopting the committee’s rules and regulations for the coming term. Chair Hurley requested that subcommittee appointments be postponed; the committee approved a motion to postpone subcommittee appointments to the committee’s Jan. 20, 2026 meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:31 p.m.
