Staff explained that the policy committee had reviewed the redline changes and that policy language with minor, non-substantive edits or statutory-required updates may be adopted in a single meeting under board policy. After discussion, a motion (moved by Director Donna; seconded by Director Peterson) to approve the listed policies as a slate carried by oral vote.
Director Peterson asked that the district’s director of teaching and learning (Jen) present a curriculum overview on the new social studies standards and explain what will change by school. Board members clarified that the state issues standards (not curriculum) and that district leaders typically give a high-level curriculum review in curriculum-advisory and study-session settings; staff agreed to schedule a briefing and to provide additional detail on course proposals and instructional-material implications.
On policy 606 (instructional materials), staff pointed to a redline addition that makes instructional materials used in surveys, analyses or evaluations available for parental inspection. After discussion, Director Peterson said he was satisfied the redline improved transparency and welcomed a separate curriculum briefing from Jen.
The slate of policies adopted included 306, 414, 501, 514, 516, 534, 606, 709, 712 and 722; the board approved them in single reading per policy on policies.
