Canal Winchester — Newly elected and returning members of the Canal Winchester City Council were sworn in Jan. 5 during an organizational meeting, and the council selected its leadership for the next term.
Lori Amick took the oath of office administered by the mayor and was the sole nominee for council president. By roll-call vote, Amick was elected council president; she told colleagues, "Thank you all, I'm honored." Alec McLaughlin nominated Rick Moore for vice president; Moore was elected by unanimous roll call.
Earlier in the meeting the council voted to amend the agenda to hold an executive session before nominations. The council then entered executive session pursuant to section 121.22(g)(1) to consider appointments of public officials; the session ran from 6:09 p.m. to 6:26 p.m. and the council returned to public session afterward.
Council President Amick announced committee and board assignments for 2026–2027, including Patrick Shea as chair of the rules committee with Hannah Detwiler as vice chair and David Payne as a member; Alec McLaughlin as the Chamber of Commerce representative; Patrick Shea as the Human Services representative; Will Bennett and Rick Moore for seats on the Canal Winchester Joint Recreation District board; David Payne as the Destination/visitor-services representative; and Anna Detwiler on the Sustainability Commission. The council moved to affirm the slate and approved the appointments on a roll-call vote.
The organizational meeting adjourned at 6:31 p.m. The council then opened its regular meeting later that evening.
What happens next: Committee assignments and any appointments considered in executive session may appear on future agendas for confirmation or further action.
