Marshall County jail project update: staff seek $48,434 change order for additional cameras

Marshall County employees gave the commission a construction update for the new county jail on Nov. 12 and asked the commission to consider a change order to upgrade the facility’s camera system.
Kelly Howard, who presented the project update, reported the work is about 24% complete and that masonry, mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins are underway. “The change order would be $48,434.35,” Howard said of an updated camera plan that would add approximately nine additional cameras and miscellaneous materials.
Howard told commissioners most locations should allow cameras to be mounted above secure ceilings, but two indoor locations may require minimal wall modifications to support camera placement. If walls must be rebuilt or sections removed, Howard said additional charges could arise and staff would address those out of contingency funds if necessary. Howard and other staff also said added cameras could help the facility meet certain federal privacy and security standards.
No formal roll-call vote on the change order appears in the record; commissioners asked technical questions about locations, privacy (particularly in shower areas) and whether contingency funds were appropriate for the work. Howard said staff will continue coordination with the contractor and architect and return with firm costs and any recommended approvals.
