Bloomington council swears in three members and proclaims Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Mayor Tim Bussey opened Bloomington City Council's first meeting of 2026 on Monday by administering ceremonial business and welcoming residents watching in the chambers and online. Acting City Clerk Matt Brillard administered the oath of office to Danielle Robertson (council member at-large), Dwayne Lohmann (District 1) and Sean Nelson (District 2), who each promised to faithfully discharge the duties of their offices.
After the oath, Mayor Bussey read a proclamation declaring Jan. 19, 2026, Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Bloomington, calling on residents to "reflect deeply, act boldly, and carry forward the dream of a more just, equitable, and compassionate community for all." Members of the Bloomington Black Employee Network were invited forward to highlight a local racial healing event on Jan. 20 (a hybrid event with partner communities), and the council directed residents to the city website for registration information.
The council also introduced Jake Lee as the city's new office support specialist in Building and Inspections; Community Development Director Kim Bergen said Lee joined the city Dec. 1 and noted his previous work at the Minnesota Department of Human Services.
The mayor invited brief remarks from returning and newly sworn members. Council Member Dwayne Lohmann and Council Member Sean Nelson thanked voters and family and pledged to continue constituent-focused service; Danielle Robertson thanked supporters and said she aims to do "the most good for the most people." The meeting then proceeded to substantive business.
