Lamar County discloses personnel-file exposure via spoofed email; FBI investigating

Lamar County officials told commissioners on July 28 that an employee inadvertently sent personnel files to someone impersonating a county official via a spoofed email on July 24, prompting a law-enforcement investigation.
A county official (Speaker 2) said the county “immediately launched an investigation with a local law enforcement and the FBI” and has engaged outside cybersecurity experts to assist. “This was an isolated incident impacting a limited amount of internal county data. No county computer systems were affected,” the official said, adding that impacted employees have been notified and offered complimentary credit monitoring.
County leaders said they cannot disclose details while the inquiry is active. The official told the commission they will provide updates if there are material developments, and that support is being offered to employees with questions.
The announcement came during new-business discussions and followed staff reports and routine votes. Commissioners moved the disclosure onto the record and discussed reconvening to review investigation reports when they are available.
The county did not provide a count of affected records or identify the employees by name; officials said those details are part of the ongoing law-enforcement investigation.
