Tumwater swears in new council members, issues Martin Luther King Jr. proclamation

Tumwater’s City Council held a ceremonial swearing-in for newly elected members at its Jan. 6 meeting and collectively read a proclamation honoring Martin Luther King Jr.
Justice Cheryl Gordon McLeod administered the oath to incoming officials; one swearing included the statement, “I, Leeta Dollhoff.” Following the oaths, Mayor Leeta Dollhoff and council members took turns reading sections of the proclamation declaring Jan. 19, 2026, as a day to “reflect upon Dr. King’s vision and rededicate ourselves to principles of justice and equality for all.”
Dr. Thelma Jackson accepted the proclamation and offered brief remarks about King’s legacy. Pastor David Reeves of New Life Baptist Church thanked the council and invited residents to the countywide MLK celebration on Jan. 19 at his church.
Council members told the audience they intend the proclamation to be a “day on, not a day off” and encouraged community participation in local commemorations. The swearing-in and proclamation took place early in a meeting that went on to address several council business items.
