The Rutherford County steering committee interviewed three applicants for a vacancy on the Codes Enforcement Adjustments and Appeals Board and ultimately appointed Chris Copeland.
"My name is Chris Copeland. I live in District 2. I'm over 40 year resident, Rutherford County," Copeland told the committee, saying he works at a local financial institution and is seeking an opportunity "to give back and serve." Gregory Gulick, another applicant, described his experience founding and running code enforcement departments in Texas municipalities and a background in plumbing and HVAC trades.
The committee conducted a two-round voting process for the vacancy. Commissioners named first and second choices; after the final tally the chair announced, "Copeland, 4 3," and congratulated Copeland.
The committee also approved the reappointment of Tom Beckwith and Michael Shirley to five-year terms on the conservation board by voice vote after a motion and second, and confirmed Shannon Hicks to the planning commission (term to expire August 2026). Shannon Hicks introduced herself at the meeting as a Murfreesboro small-construction business owner with 25 years' experience and said she wanted "to be a part of this, and we can grow Murfreesboro in a positive way." The planning commission appointment was described as a mayoral nomination that the committee confirmed by voice vote.
The committee's actions will be forwarded to the full County Commission as required by appointment procedure.
