Pipestone County approves unpaid personal leave for an auditor staff member

The Pipestone County Commissioners approved an unpaid personal leave of absence for an Auditor-Treasurer staff member at their Jan. 6 organizational meeting after the Auditor-Treasurer, Amanda Sandy, presented the request.
Sandy said the employee requested leave from Jan. 1 through Jan. 19 with a work-return date no later than Jan. 20 and acknowledged the staffing strain this timing would place on the office. Commissioners discussed temporary coverage and the possibility of hiring a short-term temp but noted a temp may not reach full productivity before the busiest deadlines in January. The board moved to approve the unpaid leave; the motion carried by voice vote.
Sandy reported the employee had been out since Dec. 16 and that prior time included FMLA leave and paid leave related to a funeral and holidays. Commissioners noted the staff member’s tenure (about two years) and emphasized the office would absorb increased workload in the short term.
What happens next: The auditor’s office will manage interim coverage and the employee is expected to return no later than Jan. 20 as agreed. No pay or benefits changes were recorded in the meeting minutes beyond the approved unpaid leave.
