Historic‑designation referral deferred while archaeology report is completed

The Fort Lauderdale Historic Preservation Board voted to defer consideration of a potential archaeological designation for materials recently identified on the beach, after the Broward Trust for Historic Preservation told the board that consultant Bob Carr is finishing research and a report is expected by February. The board’s deferral leaves the referral on the schedule for further review rather than deciding the matter tonight.

Board members opened the item citing a history of repeated deferrals and paperwork delays. Mikaela Tonka, president of the Broward Trust for Historic Preservation, said staff and volunteers have identified positive sites and are awaiting the final consultant report; she told the board she expected the findings to be available before the next meeting. Several members said the matter could generate a long conversation about ownership, origin and implications of the materials and therefore favored postponing a final decision so the factual record can be completed.

Members also discussed process questions: whether the application had been advertised correctly as a referral versus a deferral, and whether the applicant had requested prior postponements in November and subsequent months. A motion to defer the case to the February meeting carried after a voice vote; the board recorded one opposed vote and one abstention during that roll call. The chair said the deferral will give the Trust and staff time to provide the additional archaeological documentation described by presenters.

The board did not take any formal action tonight on designation; the item will return after staff posts the consultant report and any additional application materials. The next procedural step will be the board’s review of the authorizing report and any supplemental archaeological testing or monitoring recommendations that staff and the Trust provide.
