The Thurston County Board of County Commissioners voted to rescind a December 16 levy resolution and approve a corrected replacement on Wednesday after staff identified an error in the resolution’s paragraph 2.
Summer Miller, the county’s budget and finance manager, told the board that "there was an error that was overlooked on number 2 of the resolution adopted on December 16 on the total dollar amount and percentage for the road levy collection." Miller said the correct figure is about $4,800,000, or roughly 22.5 percent, and that the correction would shift approximately $4,700,000 from the road levy into the general fund.
Miller said she had checked with assessor’s office staff and consulted Department of Revenue and legal staff; "there's nothing in statute that prohibits you from making this correction," she told commissioners. After discussion, an unidentified commissioner moved to rescind the prior resolution and approve a corrected version; the motion was seconded and the board voted in favor.
Chair (name not specified) summarized the action as rescinding the earlier resolution and adopting a corrected version to ensure the county captures the intended levy and percentage amounts.
The board’s action was procedural: staff said the correction is intended to align the adopted resolution with the assessor’s valuation work and to secure maximum collection consistent with statutory and Department of Revenue guidance. The meeting record does not show additional changes to tax rates or other levy policy beyond the corrected figures.
The board did not identify any legal impediment to acting in early January. The corrected resolution replaces the version the board adopted on Dec. 16 and was approved during the Jan. 7 work session.
