Board approves consensus items, MOUs and meeting schedule; personnel report adopted after closed session
Summary
The board approved amended agenda items and consensus items (including a revised MOU expanding the Brooklyn Arts Music Academy to three schools), carried policy 2235 changes, scheduled budget and town‑hall dates and approved the personnel report after a closed session.
The New Hanover County Schools board handled routine business and several consensus items at its January meeting, approving amended agendas, MOUs and meeting schedules.
After adopting a short amendment to the agenda, the board approved consensus items with two pulled items; it later approved item A and item E individually and voted to accept an MOU that expands the Brooklyn Arts Music Academy program to Mary Howe Pre‑K, Johnson Pre‑K and Forest Hills Elementary (vote recorded 7‑0). The board also approved a set of contract change orders and records of contract adjustments after staff explained their purpose.
On governance items, the board adopted policy 2235 (advance posting of draft meeting materials) by unanimous vote and referred policy 22‑30 back to the policy committee for further revision. The board subsequently reverted proposed additions to policy 2127 concerning social‑media language and adopted other consent items as presented.
The board then entered closed session under cited state statutes to discuss confidential student‑record issues, attorney‑client matters and personnel. After returning to open session the personnel report was approved by voice vote (7‑0). The board scheduled a budget work session on Feb. 25 at noon, moved the March regular meeting from March 3 to March 10, and set a public town hall with a budget focus for Jan. 28 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The meeting adjourned at about 8:26 p.m.
