Summary
Staff told the Services Committee that work by Verofiber, UltaFiber and Brightspeed is underway around Sunbury, that more than 20 permits have been submitted (3–4 approved so far), and that the city has asked a provider to install empty conduit to allow the city to pull a municipal line later.
City staff updated the Services Committee Jan. 7 on multiple private fiber installations in and near Sunbury and on the city’s conduit requests to leverage private construction. Speaker 2 showed maps of ongoing directional boring and backbone routes, saying Verofiber is installing a loop along State Route 3 and is expected to reach city limits in February if weather permits.
Staff said UltaFiber (listed in the packet) is installing residential fiber in neighborhoods east of North State Street and south of Granville through Sunbury Meadows, and staff has asked that company to install empty conduit (an unfilled pipe) as part of its work so the city can pull its own fiber later. Speaker 2 said the city is coordinating hand‑hole locations and trying to limit disruption to the square.
Speaker 2 reported more than 20 permit applications have been submitted by Brightspeed and UltaFiber alone, with three to four permits approved to date while staff follows its installation guidelines and inspection procedures. "They provide door hangers and customer notices," Speaker 2 said, describing how providers notify homeowners of nearby construction.
Committee members said they welcomed multiple providers and competition; Speaker 4 said the providers appear to be following customer service expectations. Staff said Redantus reviews and inspects larger projects and that the city will continue to enforce its fiber optic installation guidelines to ensure consistent standards across providers.
No formal action was taken; staff and committee members said they will continue permitting review and coordination to reduce impacts to neighborhoods.
