At the Public Safety Committee meeting, the sheriff reported that Brian Dale will succeed Chief Sedaris upon retirement and described a multi-unit response to an apparent stabbing in Radisson that produced a suspect arrest within hours; the office also reported a rise in December crashes and three fatalities for the year.
At the Sawyer County Public Safety Committee meeting the sheriff reported a planned leadership transition and described a recent major investigation.
"Our new chief, Brian Dale, who's going to take over for chief Sedaris after his retirement," the sheriff said, noting Chief Sedaris' last working day would be the 10th and that Detective Brian Dale will take over as chief deputy "officially" the following Sunday. The committee acknowledged the transition and thanked outgoing leadership.
The sheriff detailed a Tuesday response to a call from a distraught husband in Radisson who reported his wife had been stabbed. Deputies secured the residence, preserved evidence and used phone contact and follow-up inquiries to locate a suspect. "Because of what they did, we learned where the suspect was, and we were able to execute a traffic stop on him...and ended up taking him in custody, having the suspect in custody within several hours," the sheriff said. He credited patrol deputies, three detectives who logged nearly 20 hours on-scene, the SWAT team for securing outbuildings, dispatch staff for sustained phone contact and the Department of Justice mobile forensic lab for evidence processing.
The sheriff also highlighted traffic safety data in his report, saying crash counts were up in December ‘‘due to our weather conditions’’ and that the county recorded three fatalities for the year. No policy changes or new directives were recorded on the meeting record; the report was informational.
The committee offered brief praise for deputies and dispatch staff, and the sheriff closed his remarks without requesting formal action. A retirement recognition for the departing chief was delivered later in the meeting.
