Scott Golden, Allegany County director of emergency management, told the public safety committee on Jan. 7 that his office is tracking large events, running exercises and pursuing accreditation from the New York State Emergency Management Association.
“One of our goals is to try to become accredited by the New York State Emergency Management Association,” Golden said, acknowledging the process involves many categories and subcategories and that the office is working toward a tentative target in February. He described recent workshops (iPAWS) and a functional-needs tabletop exercise and said accreditation could unlock additional grant opportunities.
Golden proposed two sessions of tier-3 training for elected officials — a roughly two-hour session in the morning and an evening session — to review laws governing emergency and disaster management and local roles in emergency orders. Committee members said the training would also support municipalities, fire districts and EMS personnel in grant-seeking and preparedness.
Probation Director Scott Grandier reported that the youth court program will begin taking referrals Monday, with the Core Learning Center coordinator leading implementation. Grandier said the youth court link is now on the county website under probation and that he has high hopes for the program’s success and sustained funding.
What’s next: The committee will schedule the tier-3 training sessions and staff will proceed with accreditation steps and training coordination.
