Sheriff Scott Ciccarello told the Allegany County Public Safety Committee on Jan. 7 that his office received a new grant from the state Division of Homeland Security for roughly $3 million intended to replace aging communications infrastructure.
“This is a new one that is another $3,000,000 that’s gonna assist us in replacing infrastructure,” Ciccarello said, noting the funds would help pay for towers, antennas and cabling. He said the county now manages approximately $14 million annually across multiple grants and credited staff for grant-seeking work.
Ciccarello also reported that the county’s 9-1-1 center achieved accreditation after a two-year effort and that the jail and court-security components had reaccreditation status; the sheriff said his staff completed about 2,100 hours of in-house training for field training officers last year. The committee approved the sheriff’s request to establish a capital account for PSAP grant funds via a memorandum of agreement and voted to accept and budget the 2024–25 statewide interoperable communications targeted grant for $3,000,000.
When asked for details, the sheriff reiterated the grant’s purpose: to replace aging towers and the associated equipment that supports communications and public-safety dispatch.
What’s next: Execution of the MOE and budgeting steps will follow so grant funds can be applied to planned infrastructure replacements.
