The Town of Nashville council authorized staff Jan. 6 to pursue eminent domain to acquire property needed for a lift station as part of the Regency Estates sewer extension project.
Randy and staff said bids are due Jan. 22 and that the proposed pump station sits on a vacant lot whose record owner is a defunct corporation; taxes on the parcel have not been paid for more than a decade. Town legal counsel outlined the condemnation process: the council must decide whether to acquire a limited easement for the pump station and access or to acquire the entire parcel, determine the amount to deposit as just compensation and prepare a certified notice to all record owners.
Several council members expressed reluctance about taking property but noted the owner's lack of response and the neighborhood benefit of completing the sewer extension. One council member moved to pursue eminent domain and acquire the whole lot; the motion was seconded and carried. Council asked staff to set a compensation figure (tax value was discussed) and to send the required notice of intent to initiate condemnation proceedings.
