Nevada Humane Society and CommunityCats expand spay/neuter outreach in Sun Valley

Speakers from the Nevada Humane Society and local volunteer group CommunityCats briefed the board on efforts to reduce pet overpopulation in Sun Valley and asked for local partnerships to increase access to spay/neuter services.
Dr. Jennifer Fitzpatrick, director of community medicine and surgery for the Nevada Humane Society, said the organization performed over 6,000 spay and neuter surgeries for county pets in 2025, a large expansion from prior years. She described reduced-cost surgeries, seven-day-per-week coverage and a mobile surgery van that can perform procedures in four parking spaces when deployed.
Tracy Dean of CommunityCats said volunteer efforts delivered about 1,782 Sun Valley cat interventions this year (about 40 percent of the group's total), double their 2024 numbers. Dean encouraged coordination with the Humane Society's mobile service and thanked the board for supporting outreach.
What they requested: Both groups asked to partner with the community to schedule mobile-vaccine and mobile-neuter visits, leave flyers at community locations and help publicize low-cost services that reduce free-roaming cat populations.
