District outlines device life cycles, network upgrades and cautious AI rollout

Brad Malone, the district's executive director of technology, briefed the board on a year of infrastructure work intended to reduce device age and simplify support. Malone said the district moved away from issuing both desktops and laptops to most staff, created device life cycles and is issuing new student devices in kindergarten, third, sixth and ninth grades so devices remain with students through a building transition.
To speed repairs, the district began purchasing manufacturer warranties for the new-grade devices; Malone said warranty repairs returned devices in "1 to 2 weeks," compared with "2 plus months" for non-warranty repairs handled through BOCES. He also said the district will replace all end-of-life network switches by the end of the summer and planned to replace about 550 wireless access points now—roughly a third of required access-point replacements over the next three years. Malone told the board that the district expects in March–April to replace roughly 1,800 phones and move telephony to the cloud to improve reliability and administrative flexibility.
On artificial intelligence, the district's digital-innovation coaches clarified the staff-first approach. Lynn said, "AI is a tool to support and augment human teaching and learning, not to replace it," and described four classroom best practices posted in schools: protect personally identifiable information, treat AI as a thought partner rather than a sole source, understand AI limitations, and avoid using AI for certain sensitive supports. The presenters said the district selected Gemini (staff-only) and Magic School (education-specific) because contracts prohibit training on local staff or student data and Magic School scaffolds student thinking; student use is moderated and limited to supervised classroom activities during a teacher-led lesson.
Board members pressed on developmental appropriateness, cognitive load for young students, and the risk of fabricated citations in generative output. District staff said they're prioritizing adult learning and teacher modeling before broader student rollout and will continue teacher- and parent-facing sessions to build verification skills and safeguard academic integrity.
The board did not take a vote on technology policy at the meeting; items were presented for information and comment.
