Greece teachers report 11,715 hours of professional learning, stress 'depth over breadth'

Kara Manjarovic, vice president for educational programs of the Greece Teachers Association, told the board the union has delivered substantial in-district professional learning this year and is focusing on sustained study groups rather than single-session workshops. "The headline for this year is depth over breadth," Manjarovic said, reporting 11,715 hours completed so far and 7,958 hours currently in progress.
Manjarovic said the district offered about 400 unique professional-learning offerings with 3,643 registrants and described the work as intentionally teacher-led: "We are our own asset," she said, noting in-district trainers and cognitive coaching from Greece instructional mentors. She told board members the funding—about $41,075 across roughly 3,500 hours—was allocated toward teacher time rather than outside vendors to build internal capacity.
The presentation highlighted that nearly half of professional learning this year occurred in study groups—small cohorts meeting repeatedly over months to address school-improvement goals. Manjarovic invited board members and taxpayers to review a distributed summary and the Professional Times newsletter for details.
Board members thanked the union for the update and recorded no objections. The report was presented during the public part of the meeting and no formal board action on the professional-learning program was required at the session.
