Summary
Board 1 of the LaPorte County Alcoholic Beverage Commission convened without a quorum on Jan. 7 and recommended routine renewals be forwarded to the state Alcohol & Tobacco Commission, continued Jones Night Lounge and El Cantorito to next month, and recommended forwarding Hokkaido Sushi’s relocation to the commission for final action.
Board 1 of the LaPorte County Alcoholic Beverage Commission convened on Jan. 7 but did not have a quorum (three of four members required), so members reviewed items and made recommendations to forward renewals and relocation paperwork to the state Alcohol & Tobacco Commission.
The board reviewed multiple automatic renewals — including American Legion Post 451, Hacienda Mexican Restaurant, Shoreline Brewery and Restaurant, Silver Horseshoe Bar and Grill, Vert Liquors LLC, Whole Liquor Store, Rocco's Tavern and The Ville Bar and Grill — and recorded no violations for those locations; the board agreed to forward the renewal recommendations to the ATC given the lack of a quorum.
The renewal for Jones Night Lounge (RR4631469) was continued to next month to allow the board to address outstanding matters and attempt to secure a quorum. Representatives for El Cantorito reported they missed a prior renewal meeting because a mailed renewal notice went to an incorrect address (owner said the notice was sent to '118' instead of '1118'); staff and owner discussed returned ATC mail and the board continued the El Cantorito renewal to next month to avoid repeated hearings if quorum problems persist.
Lina Zhang, owner of Hokkaido Sushi, said she purchased and relocated her restaurant to 701 Washington Street in Michigan City and has already opened at the new location. Board staff confirmed coordination with the health department; because there were no remonstrators present and the board lacked a quorum, the board recommended forwarding the relocation/renewal paperwork to the commission for final action (the staff expected the item to be scheduled for a commission hearing later this month).
Because Board 1 could not take final votes on several items, applicants were told staff would forward recommendations to the state commission (ATC) for action or schedule them for the commission hearing calendar. Board 1 adjourned at 10:22 a.m.
