St. Mary's County officials read proclamation honoring highway worker Randall 'Randy' Hill

An official reading a proclamation during the Jan. 6 meeting honored Randall Andrew "Randy" Hill, a heavy equipment operator who worked for the St. Mary's County Department of Public Works, Transportation/Highway Division and died May 24, 2025.

The proclamation, read by an unidentified speaker representing the commission, gave Hill's birth date as July 20, 1965, and said he was raised in the Chaptico area and had worked for Bowling Brothers Excavating before joining the county in June 2023. It credited him with routine maintenance tasks that directly affect residents, including snow removal during winter storms, roadway repair, traffic control and tree trimming to improve roadway safety.

"It's unfortunate that we've, we lost him," the speaker said while reading the proclamation, which described Hill as known among colleagues for a warm personality and strong work ethic. The reading said the commission "express[es] our deepest indulgence and heartfelt sympathy to the family of Randall Andrew Hill" and honored his service to the community.

A second speaker, identifying themselves as speaking on behalf of Public Works and the County Highways Division, said family members and "40 plus" crew members were present and described Hill as a mentor to younger staff and a close friend to many coworkers. "We thank you for the friendship," the representative said, offering condolences on behalf of the department.
