During the public comment period, Robert Leslie urged the council to address what he described as nuisance conditions at vacant commercial properties owned by Imitation Homes. He said the properties lacked oversight, had become locations for public drinking and disorder, and reported one incident that "ended up with a stabbing." Leslie asked whether the city could require security patrols, "no trespassing" signage, and stronger enforcement to deter squatting and illegal occupancy.
The mayor asked staff and the city attorney to evaluate legal options and return with recommendations. "We will talk with our city attorney because you're talking about the squatters," the mayor said, and staff promised to follow up and report back on possible remedies.
The comment was taken under advisement; staff indicated they would explore enforcement and report back to the speaker about next steps.
