LaPorte County commissioners elect Holofield president, confirm appointments and proclaim January National Mentoring Month

The LaPorte County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 7 elected Commissioner Steve Holofield president and confirmed a slate of department heads and board appointments during its annual reorganization meeting.
Holofield was nominated and affirmed by the board with a unanimous voice vote. Commissioners selected Connie Grammarosa as vice president in a 2–1 choice during the same session.
The board approved payroll for the pay period ending Dec. 26, 2025, reported by the Auditor as $1,529,990.92, and approved operating expense claims totaling $1,844,449.40. Commissioners moved and seconded those items and approved them by voice vote.
Family Advocates’ director Jackie Dermody and volunteer-engagement director Christy Hahn asked the board to proclaim January 2026 as National Mentoring Month in LaPorte County. The board read a proclamation noting research that mentoring improves academic and behavioral outcomes and unanimously adopted it. Commissioners proceeded through a broad series of departmental and citizen-board appointments, accepting nominees for positions including the county attorney, building department director, community corrections director, facilities director, EMA and EMS leadership, hazmat and health department directors, highway superintendent, museum director, parks superintendent and many advisory boards. Several contested or multi-candidate selections were resolved by roll-call or named-choice votes; multiple appointments were confirmed by voice vote or roll call with the recorded 2–1 patterns where noted.
The board discussed designation of legal-notice publication after the state updated its online Gateway system for notices. The Auditor told commissioners the Gateway site was not yet reliable for the county’s needs; for now the board continued the La Porte Herald-Dispatch and a regional publication for legal notices and will also post on the county website while monitoring the new system.
The meeting closed after department-head comments, including a facilities update on ongoing HVAC and compressor repairs and upcoming bathroom work at the Hyler. The board then adjourned.
