Seaside commission approves rotating yard signs, plaques and $50 gift card for 'House of the Month'

The Seaside Neighborhood Improvement Commission voted to start recognizing its monthly home-improvement award with rotating yard signs, plaques and a small local gift card, aiming to increase public awareness of its House of the Month program.

Staff member Dean told the commission the city had previously given recipients yard signs and proposed keeping a small rotating inventory "maybe 3 or 4 signs to kinda have in the rotation" with each sign displayed about 30 days. Dean said a letter to winners would explain the program, list expectations and note that staff will retrieve signs after the 30-day display. "You will be presented an award at city council on this day, and you will also be granted a gift card of your, you know, [local] business for $50," Dean said.

A commissioner raised operational concerns after reporting that a previously issued sign remained at a community facility, asking who would be responsible for pickup and whether recipients might discard signs. The commissioner urged a process to require a response from winners and to move to the next nominee if the recipient does not respond. Dean acknowledged the concern and said staff would include return and response expectations in the winner letter and develop a pick-up plan.

After discussion about logistics and sign design, the commission moved and approved a motion to begin awarding House of the Month recognitions accompanied by yard signs and plaques. Dean said staff will create a sign mockup and finalize pickup responsibilities before the first deployment.

The commission did not specify the total budget for signs or identify who will perform regular pickups; those operational details will be decided by staff and returned to the commission for implementation.
