Seaside safety commissioners plan outreach, tabling and coordination with public works on parks and sidewalks

Commissioners at the City of Seaside Community Safety Advisory Commission discussed neighborhood beautification, park maintenance gaps and hazardous sidewalks, then agreed to pursue outreach and coordination with city staff and volunteer groups.

Speakers described a pollination garden installed by volunteers in one park and noted other park areas have fallen into disrepair. Commissioners raised safety concerns about uneven sidewalks and tree-root damage that create hazards for walkers, especially older residents.

Members suggested a range of outreach measures — door-to-door visits, tabling at farmers markets and school events, and informational materials — to raise awareness of how residents can report issues via the city’s website. Chair Jones said the city clerk’s office manages the website and offered to coordinate a request for a site overview so commissioners can direct residents to the proper reporting tools. Commissioner Velasquez was assigned to research tabling logistics and event contacts.

The commission also debated whether outreach should be done individually or as a unified commission effort; Chair Jones and others recommended submitting a consolidated memo or email so the commission’s recommendations come from the body rather than scattered individual comments.

Next steps: Commissioners will compile suggested topics for a website overview and outreach materials; the commission will coordinate scheduling for tabling, pursue jackets or tablecloths with the city clerk’s office if budget allows, and continue to liaise with parks and public works on sidewalk prioritization.
