Engineering director says historic Central Avenue Bridge design requires more time; extension requested

"This is a complete reconstruction of the bridge, and it is a historic bridge which is taking a little longer because it's not your typical rebuild," Dolores Martinez, director of the Department of Engineering, told the council. She said the preliminary-design work is taking longer in part because of the historic treatment and that continuing the contract term is a requirement from the Department of Transportation to maintain project funding.
Council members asked whether the delay was still tied to approvals from the state; Martinez confirmed that state-level approvals and the nature of the design have extended the schedule. Staff recorded the extension as requested and said they would continue to coordinate with DOT to keep the project funded and moving forward.
No final vote on the extension was recorded during the pre-meeting; staff characterized the item as an extension of time to complete the preliminary design rather than a change in project scope.
