Police Chief Alcaraz reported to the Selma City Council on Jan. 6 that preliminary 2025 statistics show no homicides and no fatal traffic collisions in Selma.

"For the year of 2025, we had no homicides," Alcaraz said, adding that the department is still finalizing reports with the Department of Justice and expects to confirm crime‑reduction figures in the coming months.

Alcaraz also described a Dec. 19 DUI checkpoint that led to an arrest of a driver who had a 7‑month‑old child in the vehicle; he said the action underscored the value of DUI checkpoints and traffic enforcement.

Council members praised city personnel for the statistics and emphasized the importance of continuing traffic enforcement and community policing. The chief cautioned that final 2025 figures will take additional time to vet with state reporting systems.
