Sylvania City Council on Jan. 5 unanimously approved a special‑use permit allowing the construction of an open, A‑frame galvanized‑steel carport at 5910 Balfour Road.
Council President Mary Westfall opened a public hearing on SUP 4‑2025, noting the Municipal Planning Commission reviewed the request on Nov. 12, 2025 and recommended approval. Petitioner William Gross told the council he bought the house for his daughter and that the original builder did not include a garage; he described a roof‑only, custom‑sized galvanized carport intended to match the property’s electrical service locations.
Council members discussed the proposal and design controls to avoid inexpensive, rounded‑corner prefabricated units; Sean Murphy moved to advance legislation and Mr. Hainem seconded. Council then read and adopted Ordinance 14‑2026 as an emergency measure, granting the special‑use permit to install the carport on the recommendation of the Municipal Planning Commission.
The ordinance was adopted by unanimous voice vote. No members of the public spoke in opposition during the hearing.
