Commission awards tornado-siren maintenance contract to out-of-area firm

Peter County’s Emergency Management Agency recommended awarding a preventive maintenance contract for the county’s tornado sirens to a Carolina-based company, and the commission approved the award by voice vote on Jan. 5.
Mike Snyder of EMA told the commission that the Carolina firm’s proposal included remote system monitoring and was competitively priced compared with other bids. Snyder noted there were two sirens not functioning and described likely repairs (driver issue and batteries) that the vendor said it could address. Commissioners discussed distance to the vendor (Northern Kentucky was described as about an hour to an hour and 20 minutes away) and its experience working with the county's siren brand.
A motion to select the Carolina firm was made, seconded and carried by voice vote. Staff said the vendor will perform an initial examination and begin repairs as part of the preventive maintenance if the county approves contracting tonight.
Next steps: contract paperwork and vendor scheduling to be completed by EMA; initial system checks will be performed when the vendor mobilizes.
