Peter County Commissioners voted Jan. 5 to approve a contract with SRI for handling a tax-certificate sale and adopted a resolution to accompany the contract. Commissioners said the county’s primary goal for the sale is to return long-delinquent properties to the tax rolls.
Chad, a county staff member, recommended a low minimum bid approach for the sale to encourage property reuse, noting other counties set minimum bids as low as $50. Commissioners set a $100 minimum bid for the sale after discussion about statutory flexibility and the presence of additional fees and penalties on long-delinquent parcels. "This is the fire sale... the clearance rack, if you will," Chad told the commission when explaining the intent to prioritize getting properties back into productive use.
The commission discussed the timing of public notice and agreed the sale will likely occur in late March with a public notice to follow; staff said they will coordinate with the auditor’s office to set the precise calendar. A motion to approve the SRI contract and an associated resolution passed by voice vote.
Next steps: staff will publish required notices, finalize the contract and set the tax-sale calendar; commissioners asked staff to set the ordinance/resolution numbering at the next meeting when the resolution is formally recorded.
