Peter County approves $3.9 million contract to rebuild county pool

Peter County Commissioners approved a $3,900,000 contract on Jan. 5 to rebuild the county pool and related facilities, a move county staff said is intended to complete core construction work so the pool can reopen by summer.
Bill Blotcher, a representative of Blue Skates Pools, told commissioners the project will expand the pool to about 9,000 square feet from roughly 8,000, include a 20-by-50 pump house, a 30-by-30 minimum splash pad and UV sterilization equipment. "The sooner, the better," Blotcher said when asked about scheduling; he and staff said weather permitting the target timeline would allow the pool to be operational by Memorial Day if mobilization and lead times proceed as expected.
The contract covers core construction; commissioners and staff said additional costs — furnishings, concession equipment and other fixtures — are expected to raise the total programed estimate to about $4.5 million. Project components described at the meeting include new slides, fencing, concrete deck work and mechanical systems for water treatment. Commissioners moved to approve the contract after a question period about timing and scope; the motion passed by voice vote.
County staff said some elements of the program are structured as allowances that may change during construction. The contractor noted there are high-ticket items with lead times that staff will need to order once the contract is executed. Commissioners said they would provide assistance to keep procurement moving so the schedule is not delayed.
Next steps: county staff will finalize contract execution and begin the procurement of long-lead items; the county intends to proceed with mobilization promptly and provide scheduling updates to the commission.
