Parks staff outline maintenance work, pickleball openings and project timelines

Steve Glamp, manager of parks and grounds maintenance, told the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission on Jan. 6 that crews have completed and are planning a range of maintenance projects across wards. Highlights included a fence topper at Gary Dexter Little League field; conversion and resurfacing work at Bob Baskin for tennis and pickleball; Angel Park Trail sign replacement and Hualapai Canyon ADA upgrades; paver seal-coating at Boulder Plaza; and crack sealing on trail loops including Barkin Basin.
Glamp said the Lorenzi pickleball courts are striped and playable but could be closed for one or two days in March so crews can finish surfacing once nighttime temperatures allow. He also reported that Floyd Lamb Park’s Hay Barn special-event restroom is complete and that a group effort with Team Rubicon will combine staff training with brush-clearing at Area 5.
On larger construction, Glamp and Pat O’Mara provided estimated schedules: the Ansan/Onsen park project (staff referenced a notice to proceed and a contractor start; staff said the contractor began in July and the project runs roughly 9–10 months, placing substantial completion around March–April 2026). Rancho Oakey Dog Park was described as an approximately 12-month project with a more definitive timeline expected later in 2026.
Commissioners praised maintenance crews for timely work ahead of sports seasons. Pat O’Mara said the department coordinates closely with communications and that a department annual report is planned for spring; communications also pushed a social-media campaign tied to recreation centers last year, which drove large increases in center webpage traffic and newsletter signups, Recreation Manager Lisa Dover said.
Commissioners raised operational issues, including field parking pressure at Bob Baskin caused by increased pickleball use and questions about whether facility-rental training would include field allocations; staff said training now focuses on community centers and is borrowing cancellation-policy language from the municipal sports unit handbook.
The commission accepted the updates and asked staff to continue coordinating with communications and municipal sports to finalize timelines and public-notification plans.
