Two contested personnel/appointment actions dominated the latter part of the meeting: the board voted to remove an external representative from the Warren County Career Center board and to appoint a new law director.
Rescind and replace at Warren County Career Center: Speaker 2 moved to rescind the board’s prior appointment of Bobby Grice (resolution 23‑007) and to appoint Ray Warwick in her stead. Several board members objected, arguing Grice had served effectively and that rescinding before a contract’s term could risk breaching a board-approved resolution. One member insisted, "Contracts can be canceled for good and just cause. I want to hear a good and just cause for Bobby Grice's contract being canceled." Ray Warwick addressed the board, outlining his long interest in vocational and career training and arguing the career center needs expansion: "We're turning students away." After debate and a formal roll-call vote, the motion to rescind and appoint passed by a 3–2 margin.
Appointment of Omar Tarazi as law director: The board then considered replacing its existing counsel with Omar Tarazi. Several members objected to the late addition and said they had not been provided sufficient background or alternatives to review. "I don't know why you're proposing him over our existing lawyer... I don't know why you would put a fellow board member in a position like that," one member said. Supporters said the district had checked Tarazi’s school-law credentials. After debate, the board voted by roll call to appoint Omar Tarazi as law director; the motion passed 3–2. The chair said current counsel Mr. Deters would conduct business while staff and Tarazi facilitate a handoff.
Why it matters: both actions change who represents the district on an important regional board and who provides legal counsel to the district. Board members raised both process concerns (late presentation, limited vetting) and contractual concerns (whether rescinding an appointment could violate a prior board resolution). Supporters argued new representation could help advance career-center expansion and bring business perspectives.
Next steps: the board indicated it will invite Ray Warwick to address the Career Center board and begin a handoff between current counsel and Omar Tarazi. Members asked that documentation and vetting materials be shared in advance in the future.
