Bellevue approves Arts Commission's $200,000 2026 project grant recommendations

The Bellevue City Council voted Jan. 6 to approve the Arts Commission’s recommended 2026 project grant allocations, totaling $200,000. The allocation funds 31 project grants and 13 BelRed bonus grants drawn from a competitive pool of 67 applications requesting about $464,000.
Staff described the allocations process: an allocations committee (commissioners and community members) scored applications on artistic innovation, public access and benefit, and project feasibility; the Arts Commission reviewed and approved the recommendations before forwarding them to council for final action. Examples highlighted for council included artist Rohini Mathur’s proposed outdoor pollinator hubs with educational resources and community painting days, and Gage’s teen art studio at Highland Community Center, a year-round free drop-in program with rotating teaching artists and supports including meals and supplies.
Council members praised the commission’s rigor and asked staff about outreach and publicity to increase public awareness. Staff said the city will expand marketing services for recipients, and pointed to the BelRed Art District Community Alliance’s community calendar and email outreach as partners in promoting events. Council Member Smadivariia moved to approve the recommendations and direct staff to implement the program; the motion passed unanimously (7–0).
