Geary County emergency services report: 2025 calls up; commission approves sole-source air-pack procurement

Geary County’s emergency-management and fire representatives told the commission that 2025 saw 126 calls — roughly 20 more than 2024 — with building fires and some large-loss incidents driving much of the year-to-year variation.
Gary Burgess, Geary County Emergency Management, described the department’s equipment mix during his report, explaining that 'fast attack' pickup units carry about 300 gallons of water while heavy brush or military-style units carry 800–900 gallons. He highlighted purchases funded by local fundraising and auxiliary groups, including a portable foam unit (approximately $1,400) intended to enhance firefighting foam capability on scene.
Burgess also announced the upcoming recognition of Captain John Moyer, who retired after 32 years of service, and said the department will recognize him during a training-night presentation.
Procurement request and action Burgess recommended using a sole-source procurement for Scott-brand self-contained breathing apparatus (air packs), citing compatibility with equipment used by neighboring jurisdictions and Sourcewell/MES cooperative pricing. A commissioner moved to allow sole-source procurement; the motion was seconded and approved by a voice vote ('Aye' was recorded). Staff said they will complete the necessary procurement paperwork and proceed with vendor contracting.
