Local artists, mentors and volunteers highlighted during public comment; council proclaims January 'National Mentoring Month'

At the Jan. 6 North Bend City Council meeting, local arts organizer Deborah Landers invited residents to a Center for Creativity artist reception and a Jan. 23 creative summit in partnership with Art Commons of Issaquah, previewed the Quirk & Quill writers group and announced a new weekly children’s program called Curious Creators.
Mayor Mary Miller read a proclamation naming January 2026 National Mentoring Month in North Bend and thanked the volunteer mentors who support the Youth Success Mentoring program (Empower Youth Network). Michael Rosenau, a mentor with Empower Youth Network, said the program has expanded since 2017 to serve all 17 schools in the Riverview and Snoqualmie Valley districts and impacts roughly 160 students weekly. Rosenau urged residents to volunteer, noting mentors receive screening, training and ongoing support. "Just one hour a week can make a difference in a local youth's life," he said.
Council members thanked volunteers, noted a need for more male mentors, and suggested continued outreach via the program website and partner organizations. Rosenau provided the program website and an email contact for prospective volunteers.
