School committee member Mister Bahu moved on Jan. 7 that the district's appropriate department produce a report on student breakfast participation, how breakfast is provided in Lowell Public Schools and how the program is implemented. Bahu framed the motion around attendance and academic outcomes, arguing higher breakfast participation correlates with better attendance and achievement and that reaching certain participation thresholds can unlock additional funding.
Bahu described the motion as a simple informational request to prepare the committee to consider ways to increase participation. "If you could just get, come back with a report so that we could... see how we can progress, more students' eating, better attendance, and even more funding," he said. The committee voted on the motion by roll call and recorded five ayes; the district will compile the requested report for a future meeting.
The motion did not enumerate required data points beyond counts, provision methods and implementation; the committee did not receive a data presentation tonight and set no deadline beyond customary staff follow-up procedures.
