Northampton swears in officials and elects council leadership

The Borough of Northampton convened for its organizational meeting; newly elected officials were sworn in and council leadership positions were filled. Mayor Anthony Pristache told the assembly, "So, I'm officially the mayor as of 12:15 this afternoon," during introductory remarks.

Julia Kutzler was nominated for council president during the nominations period. After nominations were closed by motion and a roll-call procedure was discussed, the nomination proceeded according to the council’s rules and members recorded their votes. Ron Glassick was nominated and elected for vice president after nominations and a voice vote. Judy Haldeman was nominated for the council pro tem position and was confirmed by voice vote.

The organizational actions were procedural: nominations were opened by the mayor, members moved to close nominations, and votes were taken in the order nominees were presented. Council members confirmed the slate by voice vote; the meeting record shows unanimous or majority "aye" responses on those procedural motions.

The session also included the traditional oath: newly sworn officials recited obligations to support the U.S. Constitution and the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and to discharge duties with fidelity. The meeting proceeded into routine business after leadership was established, with council members and staff offering congratulations and brief remarks about upcoming priorities.

The council will follow up in future meetings with the items placed on tonight’s consent agenda and with administrative tasks assigned to the newly seated leadership.
