Joliet council approves two Class D liquor licenses for Sharks Fish and Chicken despite neighbor concerns

The Joliet City Council on Jan. 6 approved Class D liquor licenses for two Sharks Fish and Chicken restaurants — 800 North Rainer Avenue and 325 South Larkin Avenue — after brief debate and public comment.

Resident Judy Easley urged the council to deny a liquor license for the Larkin Avenue location, saying nearby hotels have had repeated problems with fights, property damage and drunk driving and telling the council, “I don't wanna see people get hurt.” Mayor Terrence Darcy and council members responded that both proposed Sharks locations are table‑service establishments with limited seating and that the licenses are for beer and wine only.

Council members discussed enforcement authority and seating capacity during deliberations. One councilmember said the Rainer Avenue location would have about 12 seats and stressed that the business layout is not a typical bar, noting it is intended for table service and meals rather than extended bar service. Officials said the mayor and city enforcement mechanisms can address problems if they arise.

The motion to issue the Class D licenses was moved, seconded and approved by the council. The council did not record extended debate on the record; a resident had requested the council vote against at least one license during citizen comment.

Next steps: the licenses take effect according to city process; council members said they will rely on local enforcement tools if complaints arise. The meeting adjourned after the remainder of agenda business.
