Mill Valley Parks & Rec commission elects leadership, approves minutes and retreat date

Chris Carney will lead the Mill Valley Parks and Recreation Commission for the coming term after commissioners nominated and approved him for chair at the start of the meeting.

Carney was nominated by a fellow commissioner who praised his preparation, previous vice‑chair experience and “calm and measured leadership style.” The nomination was seconded and approved by voice vote. Carney then nominated Naomi Gray as vice chair; commissioners seconded and approved Gray by voice vote.

Why it matters: leadership determines agenda priorities and how the commission steers community outreach, master‑plan reviews and project prioritization. The new leadership comes as the body prepares for a retreat and several multi‑year projects, including the Boyle Park master plan.

Commission business: The commission also approved the Jan. 8 meeting minutes on a single‑motion consent calendar after members who had not attended that meeting indicated they were satisfied the minutes accurately reflected prior discussion. The body set an in‑person retreat for Monday, April 14, 1–5 p.m., in the Tam Room at the Mill Valley Community Center to review priorities and the annual report.

Staff announcements and outlook: Director of Arts and Recreation Ashley Howe outlined department activities, including summer camp registration and swim lessons; staff highlighted the March 29 spring fair (10 a.m.–1 p.m.), the Migration cultural food festival being held that night at the community center, preschool tours for fall 2025, and a joint‑use agreement with the Mill Valley School District that will go to council. Facility supervisor Christy Huwacker noted recent trainings and events and reminded commissioners of staff roles they can call on for future presentations.

The commission adjourned after confirming the retreat and asking staff to circulate background materials ahead of the April meeting.
