Mill Valley Arts Commission reports 17+ free events and new public sculptures

Sharon Valentino, chair of the Mill Valley Arts Commission, told the council the commission staged at least 17 free arts events in the past year with a conservative attendance estimate of more than 6,000 people. The report outlined recurring programs — First Tuesday art walks, comedy in the plaza, concerts and a photo contest — and the commission’s selection process for artists.
Valentino said the commission secured two sculptures, LumiSphere by Colin Selig and MUM by Robert and Lisa Ferguson; LumiSphere will be installed on Miller Avenue by the end of the month, and MUM is expected in early May after concluding an exhibit in Telluride. The commission also plans a dedicated comedy night on June 26 and a special community concert on Aug. 31 to mark the city’s 125th anniversary.
Commissioners noted budget constraints for some ticketed events: the ClickOff photo contest could be made free if roughly $3,500 were added to the commission’s budget. The commission highlighted partnerships that contributed cash or in‑kind support, including a $2,000 donation from Mill Valley Little League toward two public murals and volunteer support for knitting and other community art efforts.
Councilmembers thanked the commission and asked staff to continue coordinating arts integration with upcoming Measure L facility upgrades. With no public questions in the room or online, the council received the report.
