School committee approves consent agenda and adopts 2026–27 school calendar

The Medford School Committee voted Jan. 12 to approve the consent agenda and to adopt the district calendar for the 2026–27 school year.
Member Rheinfeld moved approval of the consent agenda, which included bills and payrolls, capital purchases, donations, grants and field trips; the motion passed on roll call with five votes in favor and two abstentions.
Later in the meeting, Interim Superintendent Dr. Gallucci presented Option A for the 2026–27 school calendar, noting that Labor Day falls late (Sept. 7), primary election day is Sept. 1 and teacher preparation days are scheduled to start Aug. 31 with students in grades 1–12 welcomed on Sept. 2. She also told the committee that, historically, Medford had Good Friday off but that under this proposal Good Friday would be a day of school for the first time.
Dr. Gallucci said the calendar conforms to the district’s collective bargaining agreement and complies with DESE requirements concerning graduation timing. Member Russo moved to approve Option A; the motion was seconded by Member Rheinfeld and passed on roll call with five votes in favor and two abstentions. The committee recorded the motion as approved and the calendar adopted.
Committee members asked staff to monitor staffing impacts if Good Friday attendance presents challenges and to communicate adjustments if needed. The superintendent said the district may revisit that day later in the year if operational issues arise.
