Bill Knowles of county public works told the board the project will use a prefabricated deck structure, and the contractor will bring the deck in on a semi after constructing headwalls. He said the closure for the replacement would be about 45 days, an unusually short window for a bridge replacement project.
Commissioners asked about the projected lifetime and maintenance for the structure. Bill Knowles replied the lifespan for steel bridges is typically 50 to 60 years and that maintenance needs are generally similar to other steel structures. He also said the county had three bids on this project and that bidding activity varies with contractor availability.
A commissioner moved to approve the construction contract; the motion was seconded and the board approved the contract by voice vote.
Next steps: staff will finalize the contract with Norfolk Contracting and proceed with scheduling the 45‑day closure and construction activities.
