Animal services, nursing home and sheriff give operational updates; shelter partnerships expand

Several department leaders provided updates to the Finance Committee on operational matters affecting county services.
Marshall Thompson, Director of Animal Control, described the new shelter as improving animal health and volunteer engagement and credited rescue partners for recent transfers that reduced shelter population. "The ventilation system in this building is making a huge difference," Thompson said, adding that rescues have taken multiple cats and volunteers are increasing adoption activity.
Nursing-home director Tim Wiley reported that phase 2 of construction is complete, the facility is moving into phase 3 ahead of schedule, and the nursing home received a 4-star rating on the CMS website for November. Wiley said the reclassification of two RN positions was necessary because the roles involve regulatory certification and managerial responsibilities.
Sheriff Matt Lane described operational issues at the jail: an obsolete relay in the lighting-control system has left one pod with lights that cannot be adjusted, which he said will require extensive rewiring and new control boxes. Lane also highlighted the sheriff’s newly formed narcotics investigation unit; he reported the unit has worked 37 felony cases and coordinated with the state's attorney's office on seizures and prosecutions.
Committee members thanked department leaders and encouraged continued coordination on repairs and capital work; no additional committee votes were required beyond the personnel reclassification already approved for the nursing home.
