Sunbury City Council used its Jan. 7 meeting to complete organizational business for 2026, electing a new council president, adopting updated council rules and approving multiple appointments to local boards and new community authorities.
The council elected John Gremney as council president for a two-year term; roll-call voting recorded seven ayes. The council also adopted the 2026 City Council Rules, which the city manager said align committee and staff titles with recent charter changes (for example, changing the administrator title to city manager and designating alternate clerk procedures). The rules motion passed on a roll-call vote (7 yeas recorded).
Appointments approved included Liz Cooley to the Board of Zoning Appeals, Mark Long to the Planning & Zoning Commission, and several appointments to two newly created community authorities (including a Sunbury Parkway community authority). Each appointment was approved by unanimous roll-call votes.
Council members thanked outgoing members in the audience and noted scheduling for a Jan. 21 meeting where they expect to return from an executive session and take additional action.
