Henry County commissioners approve multiple department budgets, discuss $100,000 transfer from law enforcement fund

Henry County commissioners spent the Dec. 18 meeting completing a review of departmental budgets, addressing line items such as law enforcement funds, sheriff vehicle purchases, deputy supplements and grants for juvenile and victim services. After discussion, a commissioner moved to approve a broad set of budgets and the body voted by roll call to adopt the listed budgets.

Staff reported a beginning balance for the law enforcement fund of $288,010.13, an anticipated collection of about $600,000 and a scheduled detention-center bond payment of $540,000. In the meeting a $100,000 transfer from the law enforcement fund into general revenue was proposed to help offset general revenue shortfalls; the proposal was discussed as a budgeting approach while staff confirmed it would not break the law enforcement bond obligations.

The sheriff’s budget was reviewed in detail: commissioners discussed a larger-than-usual vehicle purchase request for 2026 (staff cited a $160,000 figure for vehicle purchases including a previously restored $40,000 insurance reimbursement) and upfitting costs typically estimated in the $9,000–$10,000 range. Staff also described adjustments to deputy supplement and wage lines (an example adjustment in discussion set a deputy supplement at approximately $27,000 after accounting for timing and prior amendments).

After the review, the commission approved the listed budgets by motion and roll-call vote and set a reconvening time to finalize documentation and signatures. The meeting record shows a motion to adjourn following the approvals.
