Commission hears paving update, deadlines and storm-debris cleanup constraints

Speaker 5 reported Rogers Group began paving downtown Waterloo last Wednesday but rain delayed work; crews paved on Saturday and resumed work today. He said contractors have two crews, estimated roughly 47–48.4 miles remain, and the county set a firm completion target of Oct. 1.

Commissioners and staff also discussed storm-related debris along roadways. Speaker 3 said he has received numerous calls about limbs and other debris and asked county operations staff (Eric and Tom) to coordinate additional pickup. Speaker 8 and Speaker 5 described operational constraints: wet ground and safety concerns limit the ability to deploy chainsaw and loader crews, many crews are committed to pavement season, and the county has increased overtime and is running crews five days per week to address the backlog. Staff said they will prioritize hazards and safety issues and try to collect other debris when feasible.

Speaker 4 reported a lightning strike ignited a mulch/debris pile at the Bridal Road landfill on Sunday; crews responded, worked overnight to extinguish smoldering material and monitored the site to prevent re-ignition; no structures were lost. Speaker 4 also said the county will participate in a hazardous-waste drive-through collection on July 12 and will publicize the event.

No formal votes or budget appropriations were taken during the meeting; Speaker 5 said bids for a dump-truck repair will open at the next meeting and staff will return with details on cleanup scheduling and continuing paving work.
